Save disk space in XP / Vista with folder or Disk Compression

As mentioned in this article on another blog, you can potentially save a lot of disk space by enabling folder compression, or by even compressing an entire hard drive on your system….. IF
- Your drive is formatted NTFS
- You’re not compressing your system drive (not recommended)
- You’re not compressing system files
- You’re not trying to compress previously compressed files!
The last point was not mentioned on this other blog, and I thought it was an important consideration because many people might think, hey! I can compress my iTunes, My Music, My Pictures or some other folder containing compressed files and expect to see a result… it won’t happen ..
MP3 files, Image files, Movie files, Zip Files, Rar Files, 7h Files .. and many other files.. are already compressed and therefore will not compress again, if any compression is achieved it will be such a small amount that it’s not worth the effort of waiting for Windows to apply the compression settings.
So while this other guide is useful in telling you how to enable compression, I think it’s important to know more about it. If you want to compress a folder filled with word documents or something of the like, this is for you!
With that in mind, go ahead and check out this article and get your compression on!
